Maaka Squier - Canadian Fiber artist

Fiber artist Maaka Squier grew up in the beautiful coastal region of British Columbia...

"I have a passion for expressing the exquisite textures, subtleties & colors of nature & imbuing each piece with a spiritual light... illuminating the natural world in a way reminiscent of the paradisiacal images that I have glimpsed through the mists of my mind...

Throughout my lifetime I have been gifted with beautiful visions that have influenced my artwork... and in the sacred space that is my own garden paradise - where I commune with the dragonflies, hummingbirds, butterflies & bumblebees - I am further nurtured with soft & beautiful heavenly images that are healing to the soul...

My heart thrills to steal away into my 'Victorian' studio to create in a magical realm somewhere between Earth & Heaven, the imagery that has been nourished in my spirit at daybreak in the wet garden...

My background of university level studies in drawing and painting as well as over 30 years of experience in many genres of the arts including watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, acrylic, mixed-media & encaustic guides me in the composition, form and color harmonies, while the fiber art medium allows me the ability and freedom to create texture and 3-dimensional relief beyond what I could ever achieve in a painting.

I use a mixed-media of many materials & techniques including hand-dyed silks, felted wool, mohair 'locks', hand & machine embroidery, 'needle-lace' and beadwork to create my richly embellished fiber art tapestries."
